disbelief
On the edge of a valley,
I survey the ruined land.
Too great a devastation,
My mind can’t comprehend.
The beauty of the valley,
That used to be my home,
Now lost in barren darkness,
All that’s left is ash and bone.
My sight must deceive me,
I stare and blink again.
My eyes do not believe it,
They refuse to take it in.
The air is thick with soot,
On old memories I choke.
Frantically I search for life,
But I’m blinded by the smoke.
Grasping for familiar views,
For the valley it once was,
But all I held so dear,
Lies buried in the dust.
How could this have happened?
Where is all I love?
Smashed a thousand ways,
Trampled and burned up.
Stunned by mass defeat,
My land was taken from behind.
The enemy I fought,
Was a distraction this whole time.
I know when I’ve been beat,
But this is something else.
Betrayed by my own,
The extension of myself.
Slowly I collapse,
I fall heavy to my knees.
The flames of shock consume me,
As I sink in disbelief.
